Snakes&Suits just released their Fall 08 line so I caught up with them
to ask a few questions. They are a fairly new brand but hitting the
scene hard this year, keep an eye out because I anticipate big things
from these guys!
Check out the interview and some promo shots of their new stuff!
How did Snakes&Suits get started and where did the name come from?
The name is a shot at people who do things for the wrong reason.
Generally, they're referred to as a snake or a suit. The idea was to
use the name as more of a stab at that kind of person but do the
opposite. The company was an idea that we had to just make anything we
desired. We all love and work in music, design and fashion so we
figured we'd combine the 3 as much as possible. 3 of us run the
company and have been friends since we were 8 years old.
How long have you been in the industry?
Under a year! We released our first line on November 23rd 2007 so
we're coming up on our 1 year anniversary.
I know there is a lot of work involved with planning new lines
seasonally. You just released your Fall 08 line, how does that feel?
Yeah, trying to say on schedule is a tough part with the creative
portion of everything. I never realized how far in advance
designers/companies actually have to think of their lines before
they're released or marketed. Patience is the key. We're so stoked to
release our Fall Line. It's the first time we took all the
precautionary steps and stayed way ahead of the timeline in place.
We've learned a lot in our short existence and put it all to use with
this new Fall Line. We're learning everyday so hopefully with each new
line, it'll become bigger and better.
What can we expect from the line over the next 3-5 years?
We hope to expand to many clothing items and not being limited to just
screen printing ink onto t-shirts/sweatshirts. We have huge
aspirations of custom cuts of hoodies, casual shirts, jeans, hats,
etc. We'd love to have everything custom made down to the shirts we
print on, tags, buttons, stitch colors, etc. The wheels are always
turning and ideas are growing into reality. We've been holding out on
retail as well until we find something that we love and are
comfortable with.
You endorse a good amount of bands, does music have a big impact on S&S?
Music has a huge impact on Snakes & Suits. We work in the music
industry so we take a lot of what we've learned and apply it the best
we can to the fashion industry. As for endorsing bands, I've read
plenty of pros vs cons arguments on this subject but the truth is,
they're some of our best friends. We don't endorse any band that we're
not friends with. We're lucky enough that they're willing to support
us to the extent that they do. We'll definitely be giving back to all
our bands that support us in any way we can like sponsor tours,
promote their music/tours, or just keeping em dressed!
What bands are you currently listening to?
All of our tastes vary but I'll try to list some bands we've all been
enjoying lately. Copeland, The Format, Kings Of Leon, Kanye West, A
Rocket To The Moon, Brighten, Jay Z, The Cool Kids, Set Your Goals,
Bayside, Every Time I Die, Cadillac Blindside, Lil Wayne, My American
Heart and As Tall As Lions.
Do you have any advice for young entrepreneur's looking to break into
the industry?
Don't take too much advice. Learn for yourself. No one is right all of
the time so make your own mistakes and learn from them.
Any last words before we wrap it up?
We're having a Fall Line release rager at Angels & Kings Chicago on
November 7th. You're invited. Thanks to Hillman at theartofapparel.com
for the support!
